Cat-Tastic Hat

I recently had the pleasure of knitting a special hat for my granddaughter who loves cats! I had purchased some yarn for her months earlier without having a specific pattern in mind, but it seemed like the perfect opportunity to use it.

Turn Your Knitting Failure into a Success

Unfortunately, my grandchildren live across the country, so it was difficult to size the hat appropriately. I knew my colorwork gauge was usually tighter than my regular knitting gauge, so I cast on 80 stitches instead of the recommended 70. I followed the pattern exactly, but the hat ended up being much too small for a 3 year old.

Fortunately, I had plenty of yarn left and I cast on a second time with 100 stitches, measuring as I knitted to ensure I had 4.5 inches before decreasing at the top. The resulting hat looked like it might actually fit her. In the end, I decided to send her both hats – one for her, and one for her doll. I was delighted to hear the hat fit her and the weather was cold enough for her to wear it to school the next day!
