Knit Better Together: Finding a Supportive Community of Practice

Join a Supportive Community of Knitters

Whether online or in-person, knitting groups offer more than just tips and tricks – they provide a sense of belonging and friendship, as well as opportunities for skill development.

Find a group that suits your personality: Consider your preferred environment and seek out a group that aligns with your preferences. Attend a meeting or join an online group.

Attend a Meeting

Attend a meeting to gauge the group’s personality, skill level, and interests. Come prepared with questions about their schedule, interests, and upcoming events.

Join an Online Group

If you can’t find a local group that suits your personality, join an online knitting group. Make sure to read the group’s rules and introduce yourself. Here is a list of some of my favorites.

Immerse yourself in the vibrant knitting community

Find your inspiration. Settle down with your preferred beverage and dive in with two of my favorite content creators.

Arne & Carlos are knitwear designers and YouTube content creators who offer a variety of content, including tutorials on knitting, gardening, sewing, cross-stitch, and cooking. My favorite series is “Sit and Knit for a Bit,” in which they spend about an hour updating us on their latest projects or whatever else is going on in their lives. They interact with their viewers and occasionally hold Knit-A-Longs and giveaways. They are kind, funny, and highly creative!

Fruity Knitting is an amazing YouTube resource. Andrea and her husband Andrew started the channel years ago, and Andrea now continues the show with her daughter Madeleine. Each episode features an in-depth interview with a top-name designer or yarn producer. Because it’s a long-format interview, you get to meet the people behind the knitting patterns and yarns you love.

And then there’s Ravelry

Ravelry is a must-mention community for knitting enthusiasts worldwide. With millions of users, this friendly and inclusive website is dedicated to yarn-related crafts such as knitting, crocheting, spinning, weaving, and dyeing.

At the heart of Ravelry is the world’s most extensive database of patterns and yarns, with nearly half a million patterns available for immediate download. You can filter your searches by hundreds of criteria to find exactly what you’re looking for and even search directories of designers, pattern sources, local yarn stores, yarn brands, and more.
